My first adventures in Florida

Posted on February 29th, 2008 by Alissa in Horse Tales

Alissa, “Horse Tales”Hey everyone! I just completed my first week of showing in Florida! It went very well and there was a lot of competition in the Children’s Hunter ages 15-17. Unfortunately I had great rounds, but did not get any ribbons.

During one of my classes last Sunday though, Lanshark and I jumped our first jump gate, but when we were landing he tripped and I tumbled off. Oh well, it happens to all of us who ride horses! I got right up and took my horse’s reins and walked out of the ring with a smile on my face. I knew it wasn’t anyone’s fault. It was just accident and we were both fine. More »

Working with a young horse

Alissa, “Horse Tales”Hey everyone! Since my last blog my horse, Lanshark, has gone down to Florida. I miss him a lot but I get to focus on my youngest horse, Roulette. I have been working on her jumping. I started jumping her this past June and she’s great at it! More »

Competing in Junior Hunters

Posted on February 15th, 2008 by Alissa in Horse Tales

Alissa, “Horse Tales”Hey everyone! Since my last blog I have traveled to the Chicago area for a competition. I competed on one of my horses, Lanshark, in the Large Junior Hunter division and the Junior Equitation Medals. My trainer also competed on my horse in a professional hunter division. We both did well on my horse and received good ribbons. In my last blog I mentioned that I will talk about the divisions that my horses and I compete in.

I show in the Junior Hunters and Junior Equitation Medals with Lanshark and the Hunter Breeding division with Roulette 22. The divisions that I compete in with Lanshark are probably some of the most competitive divisions in the whole horse show circuit: the Junior Hunters. More »

Introducing a new blog: ‘Horse Tales’

Posted on February 8th, 2008 by Alissa in Horse Tales

Alissa, “Horse Tales”Hey, guys my name is Alissa! I’m 16 years old and I’m a Junior at The Leelanau School in Glen Arbor. I have been asked to blog about my experiences riding, training and showing my two horses. My goal is to give you a behind-the-scenes peek at what it’s like traveling on the National Hunter/Jumper Horse Show Circuit.

I have been riding horses since I was seven. I ride six days a week at Northern Pines Farm in Maple City. I recently transferred from Kentucky to attend The Leelanau School because of the relationship the school has with Northern Pines. Their unique schedule allows me to advance my education and my riding career simultaneously. More »

I hate you, winter driving

Posted on December 18th, 2007 by Elise in Pieces Of Life

EliseA few weeks ago, I was volunteering at the State Theatre downtown, working the concessions. The whole time I was watching the snow come down through the little round windows in the doors.

By 9:30, my mom had called me five times, telling me I needed to come home immediately. It was going to be my first time driving in a real winter storm. I stepped out on the sidewalk, into about six inches of snow, I pulled my hat on and ran to my illegally parked car. More »

I love you, fall

Posted on November 5th, 2007 by Kierstin in On the Homefront

KierstinFor the years I lived in Florida this is what I missed most about home. This. Red and orange falling to the ground, gold peeking through nearly-bare branches, reflecting off the fog of my breath in chilled air.

To me, this was home. This feeling of climbing into the car, scraping frost from our mirrors, warming cider on the stove, holding my toes against the heater vent. More »

What’s your greatest college mistake?

Posted on October 12th, 2007 by Kierstin in On the Homefront

KierstinRecently I made the mistake of asking one of my professors if his girlfriend was his daughter (before being introduced to her as his girlfriend of course).

I of all people should have known better! Especially since I’m frequently asked if I’m 13, which actually doesn’t bother me anymore, but still. More »

‘Snow White is doing dishes again, cause what else can you do with seven itty bitty men’ - Fairytale by Sara Barreilles

EliseIt’s been awhile.

By “awhile” I mean about three months.

I’m sorry but I’m not going to make up some bad excuses; I was just enjoying summer and life in general. I worked my way through July and quit in August. My family went to Beaver Island for nine days that felt like nine years. More »

The Lie

Posted on September 18th, 2007 by Kierstin in On the Homefront

KierstinWHERE DID MY LIFE GO?!

Please forgive the lack of updating, but everything is now college, college, college. People always told me that most of my college work would take place outside of college.
They were right. More »

On the first day of college

Posted on August 28th, 2007 by Kierstin in On the Homefront

KierstinToday was a big day, my first day of college. Right before I started class my mother informs me that my dad is thinking about us moving once again (hopefully this will not come to fruition) and then one of my oldest, dearest friends calls as I am packing things up for school to see how school is going (I didn’t know yet, of course) and oh by the way she just got engaged. So, I’m sitting there just barely managing to hold my veggie burger down, trying to keep my world from spinning off its fragile kilter right up until I got to class. More »
