It shouldn’t have to be a secret

Posted on April 7th, 2008 by Kierstin

KierstinThis morning I was browsing a blog where people post their secrets. I found one that says “I love my body and think it’s perfect but I pretend not to because that’s what normal girls do.” This secret means the whole world to me because it’s the truth, I think, about more girls than anyone realizes and it’s crazy sad.

We all know that girls struggle with body image, but there are also a great deal — and dare I say a great deal more — of girls who are quite content in their own skin. One of the hardest things for me is to be around someone who is constantly picking apart their body. More »

I love you, fall

Posted on November 5th, 2007 by Kierstin

KierstinFor the years I lived in Florida this is what I missed most about home. This. Red and orange falling to the ground, gold peeking through nearly-bare branches, reflecting off the fog of my breath in chilled air.

To me, this was home. This feeling of climbing into the car, scraping frost from our mirrors, warming cider on the stove, holding my toes against the heater vent. More »

What’s your greatest college mistake?

Posted on October 12th, 2007 by Kierstin

KierstinRecently I made the mistake of asking one of my professors if his girlfriend was his daughter (before being introduced to her as his girlfriend of course).

I of all people should have known better! Especially since I’m frequently asked if I’m 13, which actually doesn’t bother me anymore, but still. More »

The Lie

Posted on September 18th, 2007 by Kierstin

KierstinWHERE DID MY LIFE GO?!

Please forgive the lack of updating, but everything is now college, college, college. People always told me that most of my college work would take place outside of college.
They were right. More »

On the first day of college

Posted on August 28th, 2007 by Kierstin

KierstinToday was a big day, my first day of college. Right before I started class my mother informs me that my dad is thinking about us moving once again (hopefully this will not come to fruition) and then one of my oldest, dearest friends calls as I am packing things up for school to see how school is going (I didn’t know yet, of course) and oh by the way she just got engaged. So, I’m sitting there just barely managing to hold my veggie burger down, trying to keep my world from spinning off its fragile kilter right up until I got to class. More »

Adventures in pilates

Posted on August 13th, 2007 by Kierstin

KierstinI thought it would be a good idea to get into a morning routine of pilates before school starts. I just needed a nice, refreshing exercise that I could do to relax me for the day.

Fat chance. More »

Seeking tips on college

Posted on August 7th, 2007 by Kierstin

KierstinSo that’s that! I can finally take a sigh of relief and enjoy the rest of this warm summer we’ve been having.

My college is all paid for (well, the first semester… I get to do all of this over again in the winter!), my books have been bought and are sitting quite triumphantly on a shelf in my room just waiting to be mulled and moaned over, and my class schedule is set. I also have a very complicated, expensive calculator so that’s cool. More »

April and I: Part II

Posted on July 25th, 2007 by Kierstin

Kierstin(Note: Read Part I here ») However, this is how it is.

I accidentally stab myself in the chest every day with the pin of my name tag as I run out the door holding dogs and cats back from getting loose, calling for my mom to drive me to work so I’m not late. I usually am anyway. I go to work and put books away and occasionally save a child from falling off a stool or licking the bottom of the drinking fountain. More »

April and I: Part I

Posted on July 9th, 2007 by Kierstin

KierstinWe used to greet 4 a.m. with wide eyes and wired minds, our bodies sprawled on my bedroom floor, staring at the pictures and glow-in-the-dark stars just barely dangling from my ceiling. One of us would turn to the other, propping her chin in the palm of her delicate hand and crushing a half-eaten bag of Fritos would ask quietly, yet still too loud for the hour “But you get it, don‘t you?” More »

How did your mom or dad decide on the math or English curriculum they decided to follow? Which one did you use? More »
