A sharp contrast in domestic violence between TC & Detroit

Posted on October 27th, 2009 by Jeanne Hannah in Ask the Family Lawyer

Ask the Family Lawyer, by Jeanne M. HannahIn an October news feature, Time.com stated: “Unbelievable fact about Detroit: There is one domestic-abuse shelter in the city. And it only has 65 beds available. Totally believable fact: The city police department’s Domestic Violence Unit has reported a 7 percent increase in cases this year.”

The article goes on, “Want some more numbers? The unit is staffed by a paltry 17 people. And they have handled more than 8,000 cases so far this year. That’s just plain pitiful. Thank goodness there are people like Kalyn Risker to help.”

By contrast, the Women’s Resource Center in Traverse City, Michigan with in Lake Leelanau, Kalkaska and Benzonia in addition to Traverse City, served victims of domestic violence as follows:

In the early 1990s, the WRC made a commitment to increase access to its services and began to shift to a decentralized service delivery model that focuses on providing services in communities throughout its service area. In 2006-07 the WRC served nearly 1,500 survivors of domestic and sexual violence:

  • 369 adults and children received emergency and longer-term housing, including 6602 nights of emergency shelter in Helen’s House and nearly 16,000 nights of shelter in the WRC’s transitional and permanent supportive housing programs, a 257% increase since 2000.
  • The WRC served 263 seniors, a 396% increase over 2000.
  • The WRC provided nearly 7600 hours of one-on-one and group support and received nearly 4000 calls on its 24-hour crisis line.

In addition, the M.E.N.S. (Men Exploring Non-Violent Solutions) and A.W.A.R.E.
(A Women’s Anger Reduction & Empowerment) Programs served 337 clients, a 125% increase over 2000. Requests for awareness presentations, education, and training doubled.

The WRC also runs Sara’s House and Madeleine’s House, both transitional residences where DV clients can live up to two years. The WRC serves a population of 142,046 located in five counties (southern Antrim, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, and Leelanau) in northwest Lower Michigan.

By contrast, Detroit has a population estimated at about 822,000 in 2009.

The contrast between cities and per capita numbers relative to DV support do say a lot. This region has little crime. Crime is propagated by the revenue pushers of law enforcement. DV advocates literally seek-out clients in NW Lower MI.

So a female seeks food, clothing, shelter; must be due to a man controlling or abusing her, right? Think hard Miss, have you ever had an argument with a male partner or your spouse? Have you ever heard swear words, oh no, not your own dear, your spouse or boyfriend, if you are saying them it's because he says them too much around you.

How much money is allocated for MEN suffering from the abuse, neglect, and ultimate control under the hands of the female partner, housing, medicaid, subsidation of any kind? Nope, do you have custody of the children, no, of course not, men don't receive that in Michigan, they need to be providing a paycheck, that is their role, nothing else.

The leaps and bounds feminism has achieved beginning in the early 60's, has morphed into a revenue seeking monster that;s insatiable. If a woman needs assistance, certainly it must be due to being a victim of DV at some point in time.

Funny thing, lawyers, judges, court personnel, law enforcement, court admin staff, social workers, counselors; they just don't have dv related issues, well the men don't. And if the woman initiate it chances are it won't see the light of day, ever.

Marriage is meant to be between a man and a woman. Of course, if one feels "unhappy" just apply for divorce, it's unilaterally granted, just keep in mind the dv industry is behind you dear. Besides, we need to keep 60,000 DHS workers, court personnel, senior - level dv advocates, commanding stable, lucrative, recession-proof salaries intact.

Good news! Joe Biden is our VP!
