There was good news last Wednesday when the U.S. Postal Service declared it would keep thousands of rural post offices open instead of closing them. Rural communities and their congresspeople claim that closing them would be an unfair hardship on people in rural areas, and they’ve been putting the pressure on the Postal Service. But naturally, there are people who say small post offices are a waste of money and that rural folk can get along perfectly well with a privatized service.

Sometimes a gal just needs something good and greasy and salty to make her feel everything is right with the world. This past weekend was one of those moments. With the vehicules on the semi-permanent fritz, not being able to grocery shop in person (“No, honey. I know chocolate chips are expensive, but please get them anyway… And yes, we DO need more milk.”), the kids having just recovered from not one, but two pernicious spring bugs, and a host of other minor annoyances, I needed a little bit of pampering.

In 5,000 B.C. the scene was tall forests, limestone canyons, a big spring with drinking water, a navigable river flowing into a larger river and then a sea; this was the area called Sboryanovo in northeast Bulgaria.

About 700 B.C. the Getae tribe, “Children of the Sun,” lived here. They farmed, built a stone wall around their sun worshiping sanctuary, practiced their religion, built a fortress and traded goods by using the Krapinets River going to the Danube River and into the Black Sea.

Is it right to “get back at” your teen on Facebook?

Lately I’ve been seeing on the news how parents are getting back at their kids via Facebook. I have to say I completely disagree with this behavior.

I saw where a man made a video to his daughter explaining to her how he was disappointed with her complaining on Facebook then he proceeded to destroy her computer. He posted the video on the Internet. I can’t say I completely disagree with this guy. I watched the video and from what I remember it was just explaining that she was acting like a spoiled brat and he wasn’t going to take it anymore. Maybe I’m being inconsistent but although extreme, I didn’t find his actions to be the “get back” behavior that I really don’t like. More »

Religion in China

I just had a discussion with a person about religions in China. He was of the opinion that the people of China were seeking God in their own way. He also said that they are not to be faulted for what they’ve been doing for thousands of years.

That got me thinking. I have taught world religions in high school, but my recollection of the various forms of belief systems in China was a bit hazy. I thought it would be interesting to refresh my memory of what I knew about the subject. More »
